Things to Consider When Purchasing a Crossbow

There are many factors to consider when purchasing a crossbow. This article will cover just a few of the basic ones that you will want to make prior to your purchase. Ignoring these factors may result in buying a product that will not be ideal for your particular situation.

Probably the most important factor that you will want to explore before making your crossbow purchase, are the local laws and regulations that govern crossbow use in your area. Many states only allow crossbows to be used by handicapped hunters. Others will allow use during rifle season only. Laws vary significantly from state to state, so be sure to get all the details before you buy.

The second thing to consider in purchasing a crossbow is the price. Many people will try to save money on an initial crossbow purchase and will end up with a product that they are dissatisfied with. Most inexpensive models are poorly made, don’t operate efficiently and don’t hold up well over time. They may not be as accurate or as dependable as a quality made product. You can spend anywhere from $200 to $2000 purchasing a crossbow. Generally speaking, a product in the $400 to $1200 range will yield a reasonably priced, quality product. Excalibur, TenPoint and Horton all make quality products within this price range.

A few more items you will want to consider before making your purchase are the crossbow’s speed, noise level and ability to absorb recoil. Most crossbows on the market have a speed rating of somewhere between 250 – 350 feet per second. A crossbow with an FPS rating of 250 feet per second should be sufficient for hunting, but anything more will provide you with a flatter trajectory which will make judging the distance less critical. The drawback of a crossbow with a greater FPS rating usually comes in the form of noise, recoil and increased draw weight. You will want to find a crossbow that is a good balance for your own personal comfort and ability level.
